Rosacea and Skin Redness

Redness of the face can be quite bothersome, and even painful. There are medications and preventive measures to decrease it, but if you think it is something you just have to live with, I am pleased to say, that you don’t. You can have clear, bright, healthy skin, and it is well within reach. There are many causes of redness in the skin. Some of them are caused by environmental factors, reactions to stimulus, genetics, and age. Rosacea, PIH, telangiectasia, cherry angioma, Poikiloderma of Civatte, and purpura are some examples of redness of the skin, and we can make each of these disappear with the lasers we have at Gentle Revive in Lindon, Utah. Below are some descriptions of the kinds of redness you may have.

TYPES OF REDNESS WE TREAT

Rosacea

Rosacea, can range from being annoying, to embarrassing, to painful. An emotional or physical trigger (sun, heat, stress, hot baths, spicy foods, or alcohol) will increase blood flow to the skin, dilating blood vessels and causing the red flare ups. Usually just the cheeks and nose appear flushed and might have visible broken blood capillaries, but sometimes, it also affects the chin and forehead. Generally speaking, rosacea looks like a sunburn that refuses to heal. With time, damage causes tiny bumps, more broken blood vessels will appear and the skin will develop a ruddier, more consistent flush. It is also common for the nose to start looking lumpy and enlarged from the swollen tissue. The origin of the problem is that the blood vessels stay dilated, and over time they stretch, suffer damage, and can’t work properly anymore. We can help remove the redness and give you back the beautiful, clear skin you’ve been missing.

Telangiectasia

Telangiectasia, or spider veins, happen when tiny blood vessels widen and cause threadlike red lines. They are most common around the nose, cheeks, upper chest, and neck. They are not dangerous, but many people want to have them removed. In the small spider veins of the face, we gently damage the vessel and force it to collapse. The body then absorbs the cells and the redness is gone. We have two forms of treatment for telangiectasia at Gentle Revive, and we’ll determine which one is most efficient for you when we visit together for a consult. We can give you back your flawless skin tone in just minutes, whether it be just one spot that irritates you, or many.

Poikiloderma of Civatte

Poikiloderma of Civatte, also known as sun-aging, is a common skin condition that mainly affects the skin on the sides of the neck, or on the chest. If you’ve had a lot of sun exposure, you may have it and not even realize that’s what it is. The affected skin looks red-brown, sun damaged, and it typically spares the area under the chin that normally doesn’t get as much sun exposure. It is a benign condition, and one that we can absolutely remove the appearance of. Fair or sensitive skin, high amounts of sun exposure, decreased hormone levels, and a family history of Poikiloderma of Civatte are common indicators. Lasers are the only way to get rid of it, and they do a really wonderful job at it.

PIH

Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, or PIH, is discoloration of the skin that follows an inflammatory wound. PIH develops when a wound or irritation, like a scrape, rash, or pimple, causes the skin to become inflamed. As the skin heals, it produces too much melanin. Melanin is the protein in the skin that gives the skin its color. It’s the excess melanin that darkens and discolors the skin. This discoloration remains even after the wound has completely healed. PIH usually looks like a flat area of discoloration on the skin. It can range in color from pink to red, purple, brown, or black, depending on your skin tone and the depth of the discoloration. It can develop in all skin types, but it tends to be more severe and longer lasting for people with medium to dark complexions. Our laser treatment for PIH will clear up discoloration from previous wounds and give you back your fresh appearance.

Cherry Angioma

A cherry angioma is a small red, purple, or blue-black spot on the skin that happens because of an overgrowth of small blood vessels. They look like a red mole, are often flat or very slightly raised, and can be located anywhere on the body. The cause is not known, but it is believed that genetics plays a role. Cherry angiomas typically start after age 30, increase in number with aging, and do not have any negative effect. They are benign, and have no relation to cancer. One treatment is enough to get rid of each of them forever. They are easy and inexpensive to take care of with our laser treatment technology, and we would love to give you back your clear, youthful skin.

Purpura

Purpura, refers to red or purple colored spots just below the surface of the skin. These are typically seen in a cluster, rather than standing alone, like we’d find with cherry angiomas. Purpura is caused when tiny blood vessels burst, and blood pools under the skin. This can create clusters that range in size from small dots to large patches that look like bruises. You can tell what it is, if you press on it and it doesn’t turn white while there is pressure. We will have you evaluated by the doctor first, to be sure that there are no underlying issues to address, and once that has been determined, we will make them disappear. You can expect them to be fully resolved and get your clear, healthy skin back.

Frequently Asked Questions

Redness and flushing of the face is usually the first sign of rosacea. It may look like a blush or sunburn that doesn’t go away. Often, bumps may develop that are solid or pus filled, resembling acne. You may experience burning, stinging, itching, and a feeling of tightness with outbreaks of rosacea, as well as dry, flaky, or swollen skin. Commonly, you will see red blood vessels of varying size, depending on how severe the rosacea is.

No. There is no cure, but there are treatments that can eliminate and control the symptoms.

Lasers cannot cure rosacea, but they can greatly reduce redness and the uncomfortable symptoms that come along with it. The laser targets and destroys the blood vessels that cause the redness of the face. Typically, it takes three treatments to get rid of the redness, but you will see and feel a difference after just the first one. The treatments can also inhibit the buildup of tissue, and improve the look of the skin that has been affected. The CO2 laser may be used in severe cases, to remove unwanted tissue on the nose that has made it appear more bulbous.

Absolutely. In a study done in 2005, it was found that when 4 treatments were done, 77.8% of redness was cleared up and stayed away for 51.6 months (over 4 years). For three years, only 4 out of 508 treatment sites had any recurrence of redness. We have seen excellent results in our rosacea patients.
